Everywhere I’ve Lived
April 7th, 2006
With all the travelling I’ve been doing lately, I’ve had a lot of people ask me where I’m from or where I grew up. Sometimes this is a tough question to answer because I move around so much. That’s why I’m providing a list of everywhere I’ve ever lived throughout my life. Next time someone asks, they’ll have to visit Fixpert if they want an answer:
- Born - Ft. Benning, Georgia
- 0-2 yrs - Ft. Campbell, Kentucky
- 2-3 yrs - Hiedelberg, Germany
- 4-5 yrs - Osterholz Scharmbeck, Germany
- 5-7 yrs - Ft. Meade, Maryland
- 7-9 yrs - Westlake Village, California
- 9-17 yrs - Williamsburg, Virginia
- 17-21 yrs - Richmond, Virginia
- 21-23 yrs - Charlottesville, Virginia
- 23-24 yrs - Brooklyn, NY
- 24-25 yrs - Richmond, Virginia
- 25-27 yrs - Charlottesville, Virginia
- 27 yrs - Richmond, Virginia
- 28 yrs (present) - Los Angeles, California
You can see that Virginia makes up 18 of the last 19 years, so that seems like a good answer to give. Maybe soon I’ll provide a list of all the apartments I’ve ever lived in, it’s got to be at least 20 just in my adult life, seriously.

Geez Sally, you should get shirts made, that’s a lot to cover. I guess I’d stick with “Virginia” too.

@Jake - Totally, I’m like on Tour, all my life. The shirts could say “Sally Lifetime Tour” instead of like “Winger Europe Tour ‘82″
@JP - Haha. Yes! Virginia is For Movers.

[...] As much as I feel like the Princess and the Pea complaining about the perfect SoCal weather, I am finding myself missing the East Coast Autumn. I’ve moved around a lot in my lifetime, but I’m mostly an East Coast soul. I’m a Georgia Peach for cryin’ out loud! My body, mind, soul are all hard-wired to the seasons. [...]

Hi Matt. There are only a few companies (unless something has changed since I’ve been there). Laser, Courier One, BEX, and Richmond Express. This dude Sean runs a company downtown too, but doesn’t typically employ other riders. I think that’s it as far as bike work is concerned.
I worked for Laser and Courier One, but I always heard that Richmond Express was the best company to work for. Usually, you can’t really be picky though. There are only about 8-10 messengers downtown, so you just have to wait for someone to quit or get fired.
The best thing to do is get to know the messengers downtown, then they can let you know when a spot opens up. It’s a fun job, but be prepared to make minimum wage (or less), not have health insurance, no disability or worker’s comp — which means if you get hit on the job your screwed. Plus, the work in Richmond is really slow and not very challenging. If you want an adventure, go work in DC, Boston, Philly, or NY for a while. I love Richmond, but it’s one of the few places where you’ll see fat couriers, haha, it just doesn’t happen in bigger cities.
